LETTER TO NATIONAL ORGANIC CERTIFIERS
November 26, 2018
My name is Dan Kremer. I’m an Ohio organic grassfed beef and grain farmer. OEFFA is our certifying body.
I am also a co-founder of Nehemiah Express, a group of non-dairy farmers committed to assisting our family dairy farmers through their unprecedented Dairy Crisis.
This Dairy Crisis is unprecedented because of its severity and longevity. It threatens to eliminate every remaining family dairy farm across our nation. The pressure on the families can be unbearable as they often suffer in silence and in isolation with thoughts of blame and despair.
Our goal, as fellow farmers, is to come alongside them in the midst of their sorrow, to assist them by listening to their story, and to begin assisting them as they work through their transition.
In order to do this, we need your assistance in reaching out to them.
We ask that you would please consider passing along a notice from us to each of your farm producers. The notice will alert all of our non-dairy farmers to the Dairy Crisis and inform our dairy families of our desire to help. Each will know where they may receive and/or give help.
We have attached the notice separately.
Thank you in advance for your help in getting the word out. There is something very special about farmers helping farmers, and you are making this possible.
LETTER TO ORGANIC DAIRY FARMERS
November 25, 2018
My name is Dan Kremer. I’m an organic grassfed beef and grain farmer, and a fellow OEFFA member. I am also a co-founder of Nehemiah Express, a group of non-dairy farmers committed to assisting our family dairy farmers through the present dairy crisis.
If you are feeling the pinch or worse wondering if there is any hope, we want you to know you are not alone, your supporters are growing greater in number by the day, the difficult situation you find yourself in is not your fault or something you’ve done or caused, and there may be a long shot sliver of hope.
First, I would like to start by sharing a bit of the big picture just in case you aren’t aware of these things and in the event that you may have something additional you might like to add.
Your industry is moving away from its prior production model and embracing 4500 to 10000 herd dairies. They are quickly being adopted across the country (including here in Ohio) as the standard. Currently, the infrastructure is being expanded in order to reach the projected volume for both the national and exported milk market totals. As the model expands, your contracts are ended to make room for the volume of the new units coming online.
You need an alternate market. The real or raw milk market is the only other option we could find. However, it would provide you with direct and independent access to the public, a sufficient margin for re-establishing your family’s economic viability, and the opportunity to work collaboratively with those you would serve to ensure the integrity and safety of the product.
There are two significant areas of risks. The first is securing sufficient shares to meet your family’s economic needs. At the moment no one really knows the volume potential of this market. The second is there is a degree of vulnerability associated with this market. Ohio allows family dairies to provide real milk to the public presently through share agreements.
We believe that the solution for both of these concerns is in engaging the public directly by first and foremost sharing your stories with them, and then soliciting their committed support in exchange for real milk deliveries to their homes—white uniforms, caps, bow ties and all! In time, all of the families working together will collectively brand as retro, local, organic and natural.
It is not as though your involvement is new. Certified organic family dairies have been the backbone of the real milk market. Their standards of pastured animals and chemical free production have set the level of expectation in this market. The real milk market has in turn provided the organic family dairies with a market option as more and more of their organic production is being diverted to the industry’s 4500 to 10000 cow dairies.
Your marketing push will be from December 12th through February 1st. Your goal is to saturate every form of media with the Dairy Crisis story including the solution until every American can repeat it in their sleep. We will help by sharing your family stories. Please take a look at the attached stories appeal letter and the first story submitted, then send yours along for us to share.
Remember, you are not alone and imagine having your real milk delivered to homes and families whom you know personally.
